Sanding I'm OK with but shims are something new to me. OK, maybe I'm being a bit defiant about work needing done here. They're going at the upper range of some of my options though given that I'm trying to be as low cost about it as possible. The classic vibe neck would be a dream I've played on one and it feels amazing for the price range of the guitar. I can pick up a 2nd hand surf green affinity with the laurel fingerboard for about 120-150 near me and I'm hoping to just do a straight up swap with someone local for their maple neck. Hi archetype thanks for the warm welcome and advice. Your questions are the same as other folks' questions and have been answered, here, many times. Here's the real answer: use the search feature, here, and search for 'build partscaster' and 'assemble partscaster' Honestly, there's a few hours of reading that will tell you everything that you need to know. If your guitar needs a shim and you refuse to put one in, you'll have a guitar that wou't play right. If the idea of shimming a neck puts you off, IMO you shouldn't assemble a guitar. Assembly and setup are skills that you will need to acquire by doing. Low budget isn't difficult, but low fuss is just a dream. The cheap route is best taken by folks who have a set of appropriate skills. Some of those are great and some require a lot of work to make them usable.

The cheap route is an Asian neck like a Kimise. If you're set on a maple fretboard neck, the Squier Classic Vibe 50s Stratocaster neck is one of the best ones at a reasonable price. The neck may fit the pocket perfectly, but dimensions can vary a bit within manufacturing tolerances and you may need to 'fit' the neck and body together. You should assume that you'll need to sand the sides of the neck pocket to 'fine tune' the fit. Doesn't matter who the manufacturer of the neck and body are as long as they are dimensionally correct. In theory, any Fender spec Stratocaster neck will drop into a Stratocaster with a Fender spec pocket. What's your total budget for this project?
